988 is the new, nationwide, 3-digit phone number for Americans in crisis to connect with suicide prevention and mental health crisis counselors. Effective July 16, 2022, dialing “988” will route your call to the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline.
What does this mean for consumers?
A new dialing procedure for area codes 417, 501, 660 and 816 is now in place. Anyone with a telephone number in area codes 417, 501, 660 and 816 must dial 10-digits (area code + number) instead of 7-digits to complete a local call. 1+area code+ number is still required for a long distance call.
When will the change begin?
Beginning July 16, 2022, dialing “988” will route your call to the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline in all area codes. You may still reach the lifeline by calling 1-800-273-TALK (8255).
